Finding Your Niche with Podcasting
Hello. I'm Lij Shaw with PodcastProfessors.com. We often get asked by people how they can identify their target audience. Finding your niche with podcasting can be hard, but there are lots of different ways to figure this and Lij will be addressing much of this in this video blog post.
Did you know the best way to include the largest audience for your podcast is by effectively excluding people?
Let me explain. If you are planning to launch your podcast, you should know that the internet is an extremely noisy environment. According to Wikipedia, there are already over 115,000 english-speaking podcasts. How are you going to differentiate yourself from the competition? How is your ideal listener going to find you show? The answer... by niching down.
Niching down means that you will want to niche down so specifically that you will find out who exactly your listener will be. In doing so, you will be discarding all other options on who your listener will not be.
I know what you're thinking... "I want my audience to be as big as possible. I don't want to miss out on any opportunities to reach someone or generate a possible sale". Trying to market to everyone is the same thing is the same as marketing to no one. You simply won't reach anyone because of all the noise on the internet.
Let's say that your goal is to sell insurance.
- Rather than helping to sell any kind of insurance to your listeners (i.e., life insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, etc.).
- Now, you might want to niche down even further by marketing to one topic. You might choose life insurance based on this example.
- Then you would niche down again and focus on a certain age group. Let's say that you focused on people age 60 and over and then drill down again to focus on burial benefit plans for example.
- Then you may niche down again and focus on widowed or single elderly who don't want to burden their loved ones by leaving property behind. If you still want to dive deeper, you could focus on a certain income bracket.
Drilling down so deep into your target market you will have the opposite effect of excluding a market. This will allow you to learn the most about what your audience is looking for.
